The concept behind the design of this loft is based on the juxtaposition of contrasting elements, materials, and textures. the masonry exterior walls and heavy timber post and beam frame of the original building structure were left exposed and unfinished, while new construction elements reflecting modern construction practices and slick finishes are inserted into the volume of space, with minimal attachment to the original structure. much of the spatial definition is established by built-in or free standing furniture, custom designed and locally fabricated for this project. Cool glass and steel tables and bar stools contrast with the warmth of the natural unfinished wood ceiling, while commenting on the steel connections of the original structure. A sofa, rendered in hair-on steer hide upholstery and hi-gloss black lacquer and granite, contains built-in bookshelves below the arms and back. The entry hall becomes a gallery, with black lacquer cubicles carved out of a wall skinned with pressed metal ceiling panels that display the client’s collection of porcelain and glass. A custom stainless steel lavatory was designed for the bath. Industrial light fixtures are used in conjunction with hi-tech fixtures and controls to create different effects.
