Designed for an “empty nester” couple, this house replaced a 50 year old ranch house that had fallen into disrepair. The house is organized around a U-shaped courtyard, with the open end of the U facing south. All of the major public and private spaces open directly onto the courtyard through large sliding glass doors, extending indoor living space. The courtyard paving is of the same material and is at the same level as the interior floor, allowing the interior space to flow seamlessly outdoors. A raised planter provides shade and privacy as well as additional seating, while breaking the courtyard up into smaller more intimate areas. A pool with cascading waterfall further strengthens the connection to nature while providing visual and audible enjoyment. passive solar heating and cooling strategies are incorporated through careful placement and orientation of glazing, and roof overhangs that provide summer shading. The auto court and mud room provide a second entry for clients visiting the upper level studio.
